“All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.”

– Published December 2009

These are the words of Walt Disney who, of course, brought many great dreams to life.

Dreams are powerful things and are rather rare. Many people have fantasies – perhaps winning the lottery, creating a great business or writing the next great novel - but for most people, these passing thoughts drift away and never become part of their character.

I believe that for a dream to have a serious chance of becoming real, it must become part of our DNA. The dream must become so much a part of us that we cannot imagine existence without that dream. It must become our sun, our moon and our North Star. We must avoid distractions and seek to surround ourselves with people and places that will support or at the very least not become a drag on our movement forward.

Like everyone reading this, I have had relationships that ultimately added nothing to my life. We all have experienced these kinds of relationships (personal and professional) that keep us from moving forward or drag us backward even further away from our dreams.

The New Year is approaching and many people so dislike the idea of new year’s resolutions that an important opportunity is lost. Every time our life approaches a major or minor gate, we have an opportunity to decide if the path on the other side will be the same or different. It is always completely within our control.

The gates in life are many. The major ones include graduation, marriage, and the birth of a child. Some examples of minor ones are a new job, new friends, a new lover, a new year, a new season or even a new day. In fact, every second of our life provides us with the opportunity to start fresh and take a completely new path toward our dreams.

It takes six months for a person in average condition to train for and complete a marathon. It takes about three years to learn to play the piano so you can entertain your friends. Most dreams that we might hold have been achieved by others and in most cases, the path is known.

There are about 2112 paces in a mile. Put one leg in front of the other 2112 times and you’ll be a mile further. All dreams and all goals are as simple as that. Only you, however, can decide to sit or walk. Will you sit because those around you sit? Or will you stand, perhaps be noticed, and take that first important step?

I encourage you to enjoy the holidays but to take some time to revisit your dreams and make the decision to make this New Year your best ever.

That is my plan!

Think about it!
